Ethical Hunting and Game Processing

Noojee is a popular destination for hunting due to the large number of Sambar Deer, which have had a significant population growth in the surrounding forests and cause significant damage to the local environment and local agricultural businesses.

The local community have identified this issue as an opportunity to explore and potentially develop a local hunting tourism industry that attracts hunters who are properly educated and want to develop their skills such as butchery and create opportunities for family-friendly activities like tracking and cooking class experiences.

To do this, the Ethical Hunting and Game Processing Innovation Working Group are exploring:

  • Opportunities for hunting experiences e.g., hunter education, stalking, cooking lessons and butchery
  • Establishing a local butchery/processing facility

The Ethical Hunting and Game Processing Innovation Working Group are looking to collaborate with other peri-urban and regional Councils to create a sustainable model that benefits the community of Noojee, the wider region and the surrounding environment.

The Ethical Hunting and Game Processing Innovation Working Group (IWG) was originally established in 2023, however was put on hold whilst we awaited the announcement from the Great Outdoors Taskforce on the future of the surrounding forest. Having received the announcement on the 23rd October 2025, confirming no changes will occur, the Shaping the Future of Noojee, Local Development Strategy invited expressions of interest for members to reinstate the Working Group. Following the Call for Members we unfortunately did not receive the required numbers to reinstate the Working Group and it remains inactive.
