Noojee is a popular destination for hunting due to the large number of Sambar Deer, which have had a significant population growth in the surrounding forests and cause significant damage to the local environment and local agricultural businesses.
The local community have identified this issue as an opportunity to explore and potentially develop a local hunting tourism industry that attracts hunters who are properly educated and want to develop their skills such as butchery and create opportunities for family-friendly activities like tracking and cooking class experiences.
To do this, the Ethical Hunting and Game Processing Innovation Working Group are exploring:
Opportunities for hunting experiences e.g., hunter education, stalking, cooking lessons and butchery
Establishing a local butchery/processing facility
The Ethical Hunting and Game Processing Innovation Working Group are looking to collaborate with other peri-urban and regional Councils to create a sustainable model that benefits the community of Noojee, the wider region and the surrounding environment.
