Consultation concluded at 5pm on Monday 3 March 2025.
Rollo Street Park in Yarragon, the site of former Yarragon Primary School, is being redeveloped into a beautiful, community-focused space.
Council proposed that the site informally known as ‘Rollo Street Park’ be renamed to ‘Angela Malacarne Park’ to celebrate the hard work and lifelong dedication of Angela Malacarne, a teacher at the Former Yarragon Primary School.
Who is Angela?
Angela Malacarne, a long-term teacher at the Former Yarragon Primary School, has lived in Yarragon for the majority of her life and taught hundreds of Yarragon students.
Angela Malacarne (nee Panozzo) was born in Trafalgar in 1937, the youngest of five children. Angela attended the Yarragon Primary School on Rollo Street from 1944 to 1949.
In 1963 Angela returned to her old Primary School, working at the Rollo Street site for 38.5 years before retiring on 19 June 2002 after teaching at least 800 local children.
Angela still lives in Yarragon and maintains an active interest in the community’s use of the former school site.
Background
To acknowledge the tireless work of Angela, Council took the unusual step of seeking an exemption to the commemorative naming principle in the Naming Rules to name the park on Rollo Street, Yarragon, ‘Angela Malacarne Park’. An exemption was granted by the registrar.
At the 4 December 2024 Council meeting, Council endorsed the name ‘Angela Malacarne Park’ for the park on Rollo Street, Yarragon.
The name 'Angela Malacarne Park' supports a strong historic connection to Yarragon, and represents gender equality in Council place naming.
In accordance with Geographic Names Victoria's Naming Rules and Council's Community Engagement Policy, Council will be seeking feedback from the community for a month between 1 February 2025 to 3 March 2025.
