Significant Tree Study

The leafy feel of towns is an important part of Baw Baw's character and appeal.

Significant trees within our towns can define the character of the broader landscape and vegetation, particularly large and old trees providing important connections between people and place, along with supporting biodiversity in Baw Baw Shire.

The Significant Tree Study is identified as a priority in the Council Plan and, once complete, will support changes to the Baw Baw Planning Scheme to protect significant trees and build a better understanding of environmental assets across the Shire.

What is a significant tree?

A Significant tree is an exceptional tree and one that is 'the best of the best'. We've put together a set of criteria that trees must meet to be eligible for the future Significant Tree Register. You can find the criteria in our FAQ section.

How you can get involved

We're asking you to help us identify potentially significant trees in the urban areas of Baw Baw by nominating them using our interactive map tool below.

Nominated trees will be assessed against the Significant Tree Criteria for eligibility and then assessed on-site by qualified independent arborists before being included in the register.

Before you start nominating your favourite trees, please check out the FAQ section to find out what makes a tree significant.

If you want to find out more information before getting involved, feel free to pop into one of our pop-up sessions or get in touch with our team.

We're seeking your nominations until Friday, 2 February 2024.

Drop a pin to nominate a tree

2 months

Do you know of an exceptional tree? Let us know where it is by dropping a pin on the map!

We've included an overlay of the 2019 Significant Tree Register for reference, which you can see in green.

Once you drop a pin, you will be asked to pick which criteria you think it meets that would classify it as significant. If you need a refresher on the criteria, click here.

To begin, click the plus icon on the left and select the 'nominate a tree' pin, just remember to drop it within the study boundaries for each township.

To ensure your nomination is as accurate as possible, we encourage you to use the location finder in the top right corner and upload a photo to help us locate the tree.
