The leafy feel of towns is an important part of Baw Baw's character and appeal.
Significant trees within our towns can define the character of the broader landscape and vegetation, particularly large and old trees providing important connections between people and place, along with supporting biodiversity in Baw Baw Shire.
The Significant Tree Study is identified as a priority in the Council Plan and, once complete, will support changes to the Baw Baw Planning Scheme to protect significant trees and build a better understanding of environmental assets across the Shire.
What is a significant tree?
A Significant tree is an exceptional tree and one that is 'the best of the best'. We've put together a set of criteria that trees must meet to be eligible for the future Significant Tree Register. You can find the criteria in our FAQ section.
The nomination process
From October 2023 to February 2024, we asked you to help us identify potentially significant trees in the urban areas of Baw Baw by nominating them using our interactive map.
Nominated trees will soon be assessed against the Significant Tree Criteria for eligibility and then assessed on-site by qualified independent arborists before being included in the register.
Significant Tree nominations closed on Friday, 2 February 2024.
