Nyalling Naming Proposal

About the naming proposal

We're proposing to name the reserve located at 43 Longview Road, Warragul, 'Nyalling', which means 'boggy place' in Kurnai language.

Through consultation with Gunaikurnai Land and Waters Aboriginal Corporation (GLaWAC), the Registered Aboriginal Party for the Gunaikurnai people, who are the Traditional Custodians of the land on which the Waterford Rise Estate now sits, Officers sought naming recommendations from Kurnai Elder, Aunty Cheryl Drayton.

Following an assessment of the area by Aunty Cheryl and discussions with the Place Names Advisory Committee, the recommended name 'Nyalling' (pronounced 'nah-ling'), was presented to and endorsed by Council on 24 June 2026.

Background

Council is the naming authority for roads, parks and features within the Shire and is responsible for determining naming proposals in accordance with the Naming rules for places in Victoria. Naming proposals are reviewed by Council's Place Names Advisory Committee, which makes recommendations to Council to assist with its decision-making process.

At its 28 April 2021 Council Meeting, Council was presented with a report seeking its endorsement of names submitted by the developers of the Waterford Rise Estate for the naming of the two final reserves in the estate. At this meeting Council opted to refer the matter back to the Place Names Advisory Committee to suggest alternate Women’s or Indigenous names from Baw Baw Shire for these areas.

Through consultation with the Place Names Advisory Committee, subsequent Council reports, and community consultation, the area at 2 Stoke Street, Warragul, was formally named 'Kelly Koochew Park' by Council on 6 March 2024.

In enacting the resolution of Council from 28 April 2021, the use of Aboriginal language has been explored for the remaining reserve.

Following Council's endorsement of the naming proposal, we want to know what you think and are inviting your feedback to inform the final decision.
