Significant Tree Register

We're back for Round 2! Your tree nominations have informed the Draft Significant Tree Register, and now it's time again to have your say, your way.

You're invited to review the Draft Significant Tree Register and the Baw Baw Significant Tree Study, and help shape the future of tree protection in Baw Baw Shire!

The Significant Tree Register includes 240 individual significant trees. The Significant Tree Study includes 28 avenues, groups of trees, and parks/reserves.

Each Significant tree was identified as significant through a rigorous assessment process using the Significant Tree Criteria and assessed on-site by qualified independent arborists.

Your feedback will help inform the final register.

What is a significant tree?

A Significant tree is an exceptional tree and one that is 'the best of the best'.

Significant trees not only add to the visual charm of our landscapes, but they also support biodiversity, provide habitat, and foster a strong sense of place.

Background on the register

Originally established in 2019 and created with the help of Friends of Drouin Trees, the Drouin Significant Trees Register covers only public land in Drouin and is enforced through local laws.

We are now seeking to expand and strengthen the protection of our trees across Baw Baw Shire. The Draft Significant Tree Register has been developed to protect Significant Trees found across the townships of Baw Baw.

The Baw Baw Significant Tree Register and the Significant Tree Study will support changes to the Baw Baw Planning Scheme and ensure more consistent and long-term protection through planning controls, with Environmental Significance Overlays (ESO) for individual significant trees and Significant Landscape Overlays (SLO) for Significant avenues and groups of trees.

What has happened so far?

To help protect our most valuable trees and green spaces, we created the Baw Baw Significant Tree Register and opened up the floor to the community to nominate trees across the Shire that they felt were special and significant.

From October 2023 to February 2024, we asked you to help us identify potentially significant trees in the townships of Baw Baw by nominating them using our interactive map.

Nominated trees were assessed against the Significant Tree Criteria for eligibility and then assessed on-site by qualified independent arborists before being included in the register.

The Significant Tree Study was identified as a priority in the Council Plan and the end result will support changes to the Baw Baw Planning Scheme to protect significant trees and build a better understanding of environmental assets across the Shire.
